These complex formations of aggregated bacteria are known as biofilms, characterised by their enclosure within matrices formed by an extracellular polymeric substance (EPS; consisting of polysaccharides, proteins and DNA), regulated expression of specific genes and reduced metabolic activity among the bacterial cells.
Alternatively, specialised phages can depolymerise the EPS matrix of biofilms, allowing antibiotics to infiltrate the cells contained within.
